Department: Utilities Division
Location: Amarillo, Texas
Schedule: Monday - Friday, standard business hours with occasional overtime as needed
Reports directly to the Utilities Inventory Superintendent.
Job Summary:
The Inventory Specialist performs responsible technical and administrative work involving the receipt, storage, inventory control, distribution, and documentation of materials, supplies, equipment, and parts supporting municipal operations. This position ensures accurate inventory management practices, maintains stock availability for critical operations, and supports procurement and warehouse functions in compliance with City policies and operational standards.
The Inventory Specialist works closely with multiple departments to maintain continuity of operations for utilities, fleet, facilities, and infrastructure-related services.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Inventory Control: Maintain and update computerized inventory systems to monitor stock levels, reorder points and part usage.
- Receiving/Warehousing: Receive, inspect and verify the quality and quantity of incoming parts, supplies and materials against purchase orders.
- Distribution: Issue and dispense materials and hand tools to utility personnel following established approval procedures.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, organized and up to date records, including invoices, packing slips and computerized logs.
- Auditing: Conduct regular physical inventory counts (cycle counts) and reconcile with records to ensure accurate inventory balances.
- Safety: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized warehouse facility. Adhere to safety protocols regarding hazardous materials and equipment.
- Surplus Management: Coordinate the disposal of surplus or obsolete inventory and equipment, including the return of warranty items.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: Previous experience in inventory control, warehouse operations or purchasing (preferably within a utility, industrial or municipal setting).
- Licenses: Valid Texas driver's license, forklift certification preferred or ability to obtain after hire.
- Skills: Proficiency with computerized inventory systems (e.g., Workday, SAP, Oracle, Tyler, or similar platforms) and Microsoft Office.
- Frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50+ pounds.
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
- Operate warehouse and office equipment safely.
- Work in warehouse and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather conditions.
