The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer II works as part of an engineering team responsible for providing engineering and design support for sales and operations. The role involves assisting in the design, build, and commissioning of equipment by preparing technical documentation in accordance with sales proposals, performance requirements, and client specifications.
Responsibilities- Design and layout of custom systems for approval; make changes as necessary.
- Perform equipment selection and design of instrumentation and control packages.
- Interface with the Project Engineer to review P&’s, process control narratives, and instrument lists.
- Prepare I/O lists.
- Prepare specifications and associated bid documents including cost estimates and project schedules.
- Analyze project needs, schedule, quality issues, and other factors to ensure cost‑effective results and anticipate/react to potential schedule delays.
- Interface with Control Panel fabricators and approve revisions and as‑built drawings of Control Panels.
- Interface with customers and sales representatives answering questions related to design and performance matters.
- Inspect the final product against project specifications.
- Interface with Field Service Technicians on analyzing field problems and offering solutions.
- Experience with pump/fan curves and designs, to properly specify and program VSD/VFDs in the system and troubleshoot the equipment if not running according to the curve.
- Design single‑line diagrams, panel layout, and control panel schematics for customer fabrication.
- Ladder Logic or Function Block programming (Siemens, Rockwell Automation, GE, Modicon).
- HMI programming (Siemens, Rockwell, Proface, etc. desired but not required).
- Identify and troubleshoot wiring issues in the control panel in the field and rectify without assistance.
- Make modifications to the PLC/HMI program at customer request on site along with field modifications to the control panel.
- Recommend design improvements and cost savings opportunities.
- Support the sales team in identifying equipment options and selections during the quotation process and assist field representatives and customers as necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical & Computer Engineering from an accredited program.
- 10–15+ years of experience designing and implementing control systems for OEM equipment.
- Experience designing control panels based on both relay and PLC control logic.
- Experience writing PLC control logic (Siemens, Rockwell Automation, GE, Modicon).
- Knowledge of plant process control and monitoring.
- Working knowledge of related codes and standards, including NEC and NFPA.
- Proficiency in technical writing.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a creative, professional team environment.
- Expectation to travel as needed to support assigned business lines and across borders.
- Occasional field work may be necessary in industrial plant and/or construction environments.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Specific experience with burner controllers and safeties (Honeywell 7800, Siemens LMV5, Allen Bradley, Modicon).
- Knowledge of NFPA 86 up to and including the 2023 edition, particularly regarding burner safeties including pre-ignition purge and related interlocks.
- Understanding of UL508A and capable of acting as UL 508A Manufacturer Technical Representative.
- Experience designing control logic for safety PLCs in a heavy industrial setting.
- Experience operating and controlling equipment such as pumps, fans, control valves, instrumentation, and associated PID control systems.
- Experience reading and reviewing electrical schematics generated by EPLAN or AutoCAD.
Travel is required domestically and internationally when necessary (up to 30% of time).
Pay RangeUSD $ per year.
