Purpose Statement
The job of Transition Specialist (ATEC Transition Specialist) is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for recruiting students for job placements; coordinating with state and government agencies working with persons with disabilities; providing information and/or direction to students; and promoting programs with staff and parents. This job reports to Principal or Teacher/Coordinator.

- Acts as liaison between students and employers to maximize student work success and assist employers working with students with disabilities.
- Assists vocational coordinator, teachers, and related staff in supporting lesson plans and developing students' vocational skills.
- Coordinates with state and federal agencies and programs (e.g., Division of Rehabilitation Services, National Association for Retarded Citizens) to obtain information regarding guidelines for program implementation and client services.
- Coordinates employer and school partners to meet work education objectives.
- Counsels students in independent living, life and social skills (e.g., life skills, social skills, employability skills, soft skills, hygiene, career development) to promote self‑sufficiency.
- Counsels students in career education and job‑search skills to inform them of employment and career options.
- Maintains confidential and non‑confidential manual and electronic lists and records to document activities and provide reliable information for future reference or follow‑up.
- Monitors student job locations to ensure compliance with child‑labor laws, insurance guidelines, and safety.
- Monitors student performance across work sites, visiting job sites, obtaining employer evaluations, and serving as liaison between employer and student, identifying areas for additional training to maintain solid work habits.
- Participates in meetings (e.g., in‑services, staff meetings, job‑placement meetings, community‑based training) to convey and gather information required for program performance and to remain knowledgeable with guidelines.
- Prepares documents, reports, and written materials (e.g., work credit, hours worked, quarterly evaluations, reviews) to communicate information to administrators and staff, provide written support, and develop recommendations.
- Promotes the program to the business community, students, participants, teachers, parents, etc., recruiting students to ATEC from district high schools to define program objectives and participation opportunities.
- Responds to inquiries from internal and external sources (e.g., teachers, community members, parents, administrators, counselors, caseworkers) to provide information and direction as required.
- Tutors students in vocational skills (e.g., work requirements, interviewing skills) to enhance readiness for employment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective operation of the work unit.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
