Overview
American Heritage School is a mission-driven, faith-centered private school aligned with the teachings and values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are seeking a part-time (6-10 hours) teacher to lead a movement-based course designed to help students build confidence, explore different forms of physical activity, and develop lifelong wellness habits. This course emphasizes inclusive, exploratory movement rather than competition, making it an excellent option for students of all ability levels.
Nature of the RoleThis position is considered a faith-forming role within American Heritage School. In addition to academic instruction, teachers are expected to actively support, model, and teach principles consistent with the Mission and values of AHS and the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
QualificationsCandidates should have a minimum of two years of experience, preferably in a formal school setting. A bachelor s degree or equivalent is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate an enduring love of youth and a genuine passion for teaching and learning, as well as a commitment to actively participate in and contribute to a faith-based educational environment aligned with the teachings and values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Candidates should also demonstrate strong communication and classroom management skills, high energy and a warm, consistent presence in the classroom, experience preparing and delivering daily lesson plans, experience establishing and communicating clear learning objectives, and the ability to use a variety of pedagogical methods along with a willingness to continue learning and growing professionally.
In addition to academic responsibilities, teachers at AHS are expected to integrate faith-based principles and moral reasoning into classroom instruction where appropriate, serve as an example of Christian character and discipleship to students, support and uphold the spiritual mission of the school through daily interactions with students and colleagues, participate in school-wide devotionals, prayer, and other faith-centered activities, and respond thoughtfully to student questions related to faith, values, and moral decision-making in a manner consistent with the school s mission.
Professional ExpectationsCandidates should be professional in appearance and demeanor and willing and able to serve as ambassadors for the AHS Mission, Honor Code, and Diversity Statement. Personal conduct, public statements, and online presence, both on and off campus, are expected to reflect and support the school s religious mission and educational purpose.
Teaching ResponsibilitiesPrimary responsibilities include planning and implementing engaging, exploratory movement activities, including outdoor and walking-based movement, resistance band and light strength training, dance and rhythm-based fitness, mobility, stretching, and yoga-inspired movement, body weight and functional exercises, introductory fitness circuits and partner activities, balance, coordination, and core stability work, mind-body practices (e.g., breathing, posture, recovery), and low-intensity, non-competitive games and group activities. The teacher will create a positive, inclusive environment where all students feel comfortable participating, emphasize effort, enjoyment, and personal growth, adapt and differentiate activities to support a wide range of physical abilities, and promote lifelong movement and wellness.
The teacher will teach and reinforce the department s 5 Pillars of Health:
Breathing, Movement, Sleep, Community, and Nutrition & Hydration, and incorporate these principles into daily instruction and class discussions.
In addition, the teacher will assist with planning and implementation of Field Day, support and participate in the school Dance Festival (including student preparation and event support), and collaborate with the Exercise Science department to ensure alignment with program goals.
Communication and OrganizationCandidates should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create and post assignments with clear instructions, models, and rubrics, maintain purposeful and effective classroom routines, communicate with parents and colleagues in ways that are timely, collaborative, precise, and positive, and monitor and report student progress clearly and consistently. Experience working with students with specific learning disabilities is helpful but not required.
Extracurricular OpportunitiesApplicants are encouraged to share any interest or experience in supporting AHS extracurricular athletics programs. AHS prefers to fill coaching and activity roles with employees who have both the interest and skills to mentor students in these areas.
