The job of Elementary Librarian is done for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program at the assigned elementary school with responsibilities for collection processing, circulation, maintenance, inventory of library materials and/or textbooks, documenting losses and monitoring procedures; implementing age-appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources; selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instruction; and instructing students on the proper use of library resources.

Media Specialists hired for an Elementary level position must complete the District s approved and provided course of instruction within 3 years from date of employment; upon completion, will receive a Certificate of Completion and salary lane advancement in accordance with the District s salary administration practices.

Essential Functions
  • Assist teachers, students and administrators in identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.
  • Conduct classes and activities in various formats (e.g., reading, storytelling, puppet plays, contests) to promote the use and enjoyment of literature.
  • Create an inviting, attractive library environment to support and reinforce library objectives.
  • Evaluate books and/or periodicals for retention; repair damaged books and recommend retirement when appropriate.
  • Maintain materials inventory and collection (books, hardware/software, media equipment, and related instructional materials).
  • Manage assigned budget allocation to guide collection development in line with established guidelines.
  • Monitor student activities in the Library Media Center to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Operate a variety of media production equipment and systems to provide media production services.
  • Order supplies and equipment to ensure availability of materials for instructional programs.
  • Oversee volunteers and/or aides for orientation, training and task completion.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to perform functions effectively.
  • Perform routine maintenance and operating checks on media equipment.
  • Perform circulation activities (check-in/check-out, overdue lists) to control use and location of items.
  • Prepare manual and electronic documents and reports (collection statistics, scheduling, overdue lists, fines, etc.) for documentation purposes.
  • Process library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials (barcoding, shelving, reports) to provide required materials to students and staff.
  • Process new student accounts; issue notices of missing, damaged, or overdue items to provide access and secure reimbursement as needed.
  • Provide student enrichment experiences to encourage a love of reading.
  • Repair books and materials to ensure availability, longevity, and cost effectiveness.
  • Research instructional materials and sources to support classroom assignments.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, staff and parents regarding availability of resources and status of items.
  • Train students and teachers in the effective use of technology to promote information literacy and the use of current technologies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the work unit.
