Job SummaryGeorgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Police Officers are responsible for the safety and security of the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors. They perform a variety of duties related to the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, prevention of crime, and preservation of public peace. Perform basic police services in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the Georgia Southwestern State University Public Safety department and in compliance with governing federal and state laws.
Responsibilities- Maintain responsibility for security and safety of persons and property.
- Answer calls and complaints involving fire, traffic control, accidents, robberies, and other crimes.
- Conduct active patrol and police escorts.
- Patrol the campus grounds; checks doors, windows, gates, and parking lots to ensure security.
- Attend MISC meetings.
- Conduct campus event security.
- Enforce traffic laws and assist in traffic control.
- Secure all buildings daily.
- Assist with investigations and maintain required documentation: testify and participate in court proceedings, prepare various records and reports, investigate crimes against persons and property, collect evidence and secure crime scenes.
- Perform related duties.
- Educational requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required. - Other required qualifications:
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia. - Required experience:
More than one year of related experience required.
- Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of campus properties, population, and traffic control problems.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
- Knowledge of fire prevention techniques.
- Skill in decision-making under emergency conditions.
- Skill in the use and care of firearms.
- Skill in oral and written communications.
- Skill in emergency medical procedures.
