General InformationThe City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department invites applicants for a Summer Camp Director position for the 2026 summer season. Training starts in May. The role runs June‑July, Monday‑Friday 1:00 pm–5:00 pm, 20–30 hours per week. The Director reports directly to the Recreation Manager and indirectly to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation. This position is open until filled.
EssentialJob Functions
- Coordinate the development, plan, and implementation of age‑appropriate activities.
- Ensure safe and enjoyable play environments, enforce procedures and rules.
- Assist the Recreation Coordinator in hiring and training camp staff.
- Supervise a team of 6–10 camp counselors, lead staff meetings, and provide guidance.
- Manage program budget and maintain required records (invoices, medical forms, incident reports, etc.).
- Recognize, respond to emergencies, and report issues to the Recreation Coordinator.
- Communicate daily with parents in a professional and courteous manner.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Two or more years of experience teaching or leading children ages 5‑12.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Leisure Services, or related field (preferred).
- Leadership and supervisory experience (preferred).
- Prior experience with the City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department (preferred).
- Organized, dependable, and reliable; ability to work with children with disabilities and/or special needs.
- Effective communication with youth, parents, and staff; confident and positive attitude.
- Commitment to City of Ames Core Values and safety standards.
- Professional appearance and demeanor required on site.
The process includes evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and a criminal background check (sex offender registry). Candidates will be notified of status via email.
