Summary: The physical education teacher is the primary instructional delivery for student health and wellness, fitness, and growth. The educator collaborates with the school team and provides strategies to increase student movement and fitness within the regular classroom.

Responsibilities / Essential Functions
  • Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of content, discipline, and related pedagogy to design and facilitate lessons aligned with Iowa Physical Education Standards and 21st Century Skills.
  • Shows motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching all learners.
  • Creates a student‑centered classroom.
  • Facilitates students' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional learning through sequentially developing lessons.
  • Provides engaging, fun, and effective instruction that builds a health and wellness foundation.
  • Teaches physical fitness skills using the Iowa Core Standards.
  • Implements Iowa Core Standards with rigor, purpose, and planning.
  • Ensures maximum participation for all students, differentiating as needed.
  • Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Develops engaging lesson plans and supplementary materials.
  • Provides ongoing formative feedback to students.
  • Shows a growth mindset individually and supports this with all students.
  • Communicates developmentally appropriate ways with a humane, sensitive approach that encourages all students to succeed.
  • Supports school‑wide programs including PBIS and Growth Mindset.
  • Collaborates with school team members to increase health, wellness, movement, and activity within the classroom.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in physical education areas aligned with the school-wide behavior framework.
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and conducts safety checks on equipment and field areas.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students and keeps records such as report cards, attendance, checklists, and other record‑keeping activities.
  • Communicates with parents, school counselors, and administrators about student progress.
  • Focuses on making learning visible through effective student engagement.
Qualifications
  • Valid Iowa teaching license with K‑8 Physical Education endorsement.
  • Demonstrated competency in the subject area(s) assigned.

Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily indoors in school buildings, with some outdoor instruction and supervision.

  • Frequent or prolonged standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student or employee injury or illness.
  • Requires accurate perception of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, and handling of materials.
  • Frequent and prolonged talking/hearing conversations.
  • Occasional lifting of objects weighing 15 to 25 pounds.
