Job SummaryThe Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The incumbent will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistics, applied linguistics, and AI‑driven language technology, and will pursue a research program focused on AI and language.
Teaching Responsibilities- General courses in linguistics and applied linguistics.
- Elective courses in the minor in Applied Artificial Intelligence.
- New course offerings that integrate AI technologies into linguistics.
- Graduate seminars on AI‑assisted technologies, generative AI for language learning and assessment, language‑based analytics, automated dialogue systems, and speech‑driven user interfaces.
- Courses on programming for NLP, computational and/or corpus‑based text analysis, and statistical analysis of language.
- Conduct research on the use of AI and language‑generating technologies in first‑ and second‑language learning, teaching, or assessment.
- Investigate linguistics‑based qualitative and quantitative studies of humanlike language generated by AI.
- Explore generative AI in human‑computer language interaction.
- Study the role of language in the subjective experience of generative AI users.
- Develop a high‑impact, externally funded research program that applies AI to linguistic research and teaching.
Position requires a PhD in applied linguistics, linguistics, natural language processing, computational linguistics, or a related field conferred by the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications- Established or emerging research agenda on AI applications for language education or analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to apply AI innovatively for teaching, assessment, or analysis of language.
- Potential to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching needs in linguistics and applied linguistics.
- Experience in teaching or assessing language/communication at the college level.
- Record of interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Capacity to develop a high‑impact, externally funded research program.
