Mock Trial Sponsor

Ames High School is seeking a Mock Trial Sponsor for the  school year.

Summary:

The Mock Trial Sponsor at Ames High School promotes greater understanding of and appreciation for the law, court procedures, and the American judicial system with the purpose of developing students' life skills such as critical thinking, reading, speaking, and advocacy. This extracurricular sponsorship meets after school from September-March with occasional weekend competition events. Hours vary based upon the needs of the position and work schedule of the sponsor.

Responsibilities/

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts an equitable selection of the Mock Trial team that aligns with the goals of Ames High School and Ames Community School District.
  • Facilitates students' understanding of witness statements and the legal system in order to present both the plaintiff and defense sides in a court of law.
  • Supervises students during practices and competitions.
  • Schedules activities for the purpose of making necessary arrangements for practices and competitions.
  • Organizes and executes fundraisers according to Ames CSD policies and procedures.
  • Engages students in community service activities.
  • Promotes and attends tournaments.
  • Maintains positive relationships with local judges, attorneys and other school coaches to build a Mock Trial culture.
  • Maintains a variety of documents including attendance records to club meetings and field trip paperwork.
  • Creates a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment for all students.
  • Has knowledge in and follows the guidelines, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Ames Community School District.
  • Ensures that the student members understand the expectations of the organization, represent excellence within the school, and serve as role models for the student body.
  • Ensures that a channel of continuous communication exists between the student body and the faculty and administration.

Qualifications:

Experience working with high school students preferred. Compensation: $3,586 stipend
