The Impact You’ll Make
This position is for a Product Engineer within the design engineering department of the Medium Power business unit. The position will be located at the Danfoss Ames, Iowa office. It involves regular interfacing with the Danfoss production facility in Ames and with a cross‑functional team to drive improvements in product design, cost, and quality. The role also includes representing the engineering function in reviewing the feasibility of requests for changes, new configurations, and new features on the Medium Power products produced worldwide.
WhatYou’ll Be Doing
- Initiate and execute project plans, including scheduled actions and necessary resources, to meet objectives (e.g., supplier qualification, robustness projects, new feature development and launch).
- Perform and document design calculations and verify all necessary tolerance stack‑ups for new designs and revisions.
- Conduct product design reviews and follow through on recommended changes.
- Develop verification plans using engineering processes, execute tests, analyze engineering data, write effective test requests, and summarize findings in technical reports. Present results to the organization and to customers in support of engineering projects.
- Maintain product design control, initiate and follow through on product changes, and verify complete documentation of all new designs or design changes.
- Resolve product performance issues through team‑oriented problem solving and document findings according to the 8D root‑cause process.
- Provide technical support to other functional areas. Interface with internal organizations such as sales, manufacturing, marketing, service, quality, and purchasing, as well as with external customers and suppliers.
- Stay up‑to‑date on engineering and technology related to Danfoss products.
- Promote a quality and continuous improvement philosophy.
- Travel domestically and internationally (typically less than 5%).
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Agricultural Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of three (3) months internship or co‑op experience in an engineering field.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic systems and components.
- Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience as an engineer in the hydraulics industry, automotive industry, or mobile equipment industry.
- Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Agricultural Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Strong hands‑on mechanical skills and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with model‑based design tools such as Matlab/Simulink/CAD.
- Experience working collaboratively with others to accomplish goals.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments to complete tasks on time.
- Ability to apply creative approaches and ideas to solve problems while maximizing effective use of appropriate resources.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- General understanding of manufacturing processes.
- Ability to develop a thorough technical knowledge of the product line, including design, test, evaluation, manufacturing methods, and impacts on product performance and life.
