Shift Requirements7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday; some travel may be required. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Role Overview / DutiesAs a Transportation Engineer Associate, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Review quality control plans for materials suppliers and manufacturers
- Under the direction of the District Materials Engineer, provide engineering expertise and assistance to the District laboratory, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Portland and Cement Concrete (PCC), and aggregate technicians
- Conduct field trials, data collection, and analysis of new products and testing procedures to evaluate their usefulness
- Analyze traffic data, road conditions, and location to develop bituminous mix design criteria and select appropriate asphalt binders for maintenance and local projects
- Perform pavement evaluation to determine extent and cause of damage and correct repair procedure
Possession of an Engineer certificate issued by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners is required within 24 months of hire. Licensure as a Professional Engineer is required within 6 years of hire for continued employment.

Minimum Qualification RequirementsApplicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management
- Verification of graduation with major coursework in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management
Applicants hired with verification of graduation will be required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university within 10 months of hire.
