Position: City Attorney

City Attorney

City Attorney provides legal services to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, City staff, boards and commissions, and the city-owned Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as legal advisor and counsel for the City of Ames, its officers, departments, and city boards and commissions; conduct legal research; advise city officials and staff on legality of operations, policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Draft ordinances, resolutions, and other documents as directed for review and action by the Mayor and City Council.
  • Prepare and present staff memos, reports, legal advice, documents, or correspondence as requested by the Mayor, City Council, or city staff.
  • Consult with City Manager’s Office to prioritize requests from City departments for legal work.
  • Represent and work with the City Assessor on matters related to the assessor’s work as required by the Iowa Code.
  • Draft and/or review legal documents for Mary Greeley Medical Center when requested by the hospital or as time allows.
  • Attend City Council, select board and commission, and Board of Review meetings; provide legal advice and opinions as warranted or requested during meetings or for follow‑up.
  • Prepare opinions on questions of law regarding the city’s interests.
  • Represent the City in general litigation matters; prosecute and defend all suits and actions brought and pending in any court in Iowa or the United States.
  • Attend administrative hearings and other meetings to represent the City’s position.
Management of City Attorney’s Office
  • Follow city adopted policies and administrative processes, including personnel, purchasing, pay and classification systems, civil service practices, and performance management, hiring and budget processes.
  • Assist in preparing and administering the annual budget for the legal department under the direction of the City Manager’s Office.
  • Supervise legal professional and support staff; lead staff in implementing department and city‑wide goals and objectives.
Other Job Functions
  • Conduct special projects and research assigned by the Mayor, City Council, or the City Manager.
  • With approval of the City Council, may conduct special projects and research for Mary Greeley Medical Center and City Boards and Commissions.
  • Assist and/or monitor the performance of legal work by outside counsel retained by the city to represent its interests where appropriate.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

  • General Physical Characteristics:
    Sit 85 % of the time; stand and walk 15 % of the time; lift objects under 10 pounds frequently; lift 10 – 25 pounds infrequently; lift 25 – 50 pounds infrequently.

    Minimum standard for those dealing with data, accounting, transcription, and detailed visual inspection.
