WPC Plant Operator

Shift Schedule

• 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Operating)
• 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. (Operating)
• 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. (Operating)
• 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Maintenance)
• 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. M/T/W (Maintenance), then 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. Sat/Sun (Operating)

• Operate, inspect, repair, and maintain wastewater treatment equipment, including engines, pumps, motors, chemical feed equipment, and sludge disposal systems.
• Read and record plant data (flow, pumping rates, sludge treatment results, gas production) and maintain accurate operating logs.
• Collect samples, analyze parameters, adjust plant flow rates, and modify digester operations to minimize variations.
• Perform routine maintenance (replace bearings, packing, capacitors, seals, shafts, sleeves) and supervise the conditioning of mechanical equipment.
• Execute pipe work, welding, and installation of new equipment.
• Maintain detailed records and prepare reports.
• Supervise skilled and unskilled helpers, provide on‑the‑job training, and deliver customer service to the public.

• Perform custodial duties during assigned shift.
• Guide visitors around the plant and assist with tours.
• Conduct additional operating, sampling, and laboratory tasks for special plant or research projects.
• Maintain roads and grounds as needed.

• High‑school diploma, HiSET, or GED.
• At least two years of experience with mechanical equipment maintenance and repair, or equivalent education and experience related to wastewater treatment.
• Preferred: education beyond high school and over two years of relevant experience.

• Valid driver’s license.
• Step‑specific certification requirements:
• Step A – no certification required.
• Step B – obtain a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate within 8 months of hire.
• Step C – obtain 21 CEUs (or equivalent) within 24 months or waive if Grade II certificate obtained beforehand.
• Step D – obtain a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate within 38 months of hire.
• Step E – 48 months of employment as a WPC Plant Operator with Grade II.

• Knowledge of wastewater treatment and solids handling processes.
• Understanding of biochemical and bacterial functions and their effect on treatment.
• Proficiency with plant operations, maintenance practices, and mechanical troubleshooting.
• Ability to read gauges, meters, and instrumentation; interpret data and laboratory results.
• Mathematical computation and data analysis skills.
• Reading of piping and wiring diagrams and architectural blueprints.
• Planning, assigning, and supervising maintenance personnel.
• Use of hand tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic instruments in adverse conditions.
• Rapid, calm response to emergency situations.
• Effective communication and relationship building with citizens and colleagues.

Required Physical

Activities:

climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions.

General Physical Characteristics: 20 % sitting; 5 % standing; 75 % standing and walking; occasional up to 100 lb lifting, frequent up to 50 lb, constant up to 20 lb.

Vision Requirements: adequate visual acuity for data analysis, reading, and operating small parts and measurement devices.

Environmental Conditions:

indoor and outdoor work exposed to cold, heat, noise, mechanical and electrical hazards, chemical hazards, and isolation.

Hourly wage up to Step C (currently $34.66 per hour) for candidates with qualifications above the minimum (e.g., Iowa Grade II wastewater operator’s license).
