Students in the Specialized programs are identified as students with Developmental Delay, Intellectual Impairment, Communication, Autism, or other complex learning needs. Students may have challenges in their academic, language/communication, social, self-help, and behavior skill development. All students require intensive, highly specialized and individualized instruction and support to access learning.

Program

Description:

Students in substantially separate programs support grade 9-12 and postgraduate (ages 18-22) students with intensive special education needs. Students require a small group learning environment with a low student to staff ratio. This position requires assisting teachers in the classroom with a wide range of student needs, both academic and behavioral. The individual must have the ability to collaborate with teachers regarding student progress academically and provide individualized instruction.

Teaching and Learning:

• Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of special education and classroom teachers.
• Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with staff and students.
• Flexibility to adjust to different issues with students.
• Ability to assist and help students with their academic and non-academic issues to enable them to fully participate in learning.
• Assist students in developing appropriate social skills.
• May require toileting.
