DescriptionThe Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions: a full‑time tenure‑track position at the rank of assistant professor of classics and a full‑time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor of classics. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.
Key Responsibilities- Develop a well‑articulated research plan.
- Commit to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching in a liberal‑arts context.
- Teach Greek and Latin at all levels and offer courses of general appeal in Greco‑Roman studies.
- Participate in the College's First‑Year Seminar Program and other cross‑disciplinary collaborations.
- Assume a teaching load of two courses per semester, normally three language courses per year.
- Direct undergraduate writing and research, advise senior thesis projects, and participate in departmental life.
- Ph.D. in Classics or a related field.
- Original and generative research projects with a plan for future scholarship.
- For the tenured position, a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.
- Research interests that complement those represented among departmental faculty; areas include visual and material culture, rhetoric, law, and democracy, social and cultural history, performance and reception, and knowledge production (scientific and technical).
Assistant Professor (tenure‑track): $90,000 to $125,000.
Associate Professor: $105,000 to $135,000.
Full Professor: $120,000 to $200,000.
