Associate or Full Professor of Classics Assistant Professor of Classics (tenure‑track)

Position Overview The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two full‑time positions. One is a tenure‑track assistant professor of classics; the other is a tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027 and require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by appointment.

Responsibilities
:

• Teach Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels and courses of general appeal in Greco‑Roman studies.
• Maintain a teaching load of two courses per semester (typically three language courses per year).
• Provide undergraduate research and writing instruction at all levels.
• Advise senior thesis projects and participate in departmental and college activities.
• Develop and execute an original research program that complements existing faculty expertise.
• Maintain a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service (for the tenured position).

Qualifications
:

• Ph.D. in classics or a related field.
• Demonstrated ability to teach Greek and Latin effectively.
• Well‑articulated research plan with original and generative projects.
• Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and a liberal‑arts context.
• Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and mentorship is preferred.

Salary & Benefits

• Assistant professor: $90,000–125,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications).
• Associate professor: $105,000–135,000.
• Full professor: $120,000–200,000.
