The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions—a full‑time tenure‑track position at the rank of assistant professor of classics and a full‑time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor of classics. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.
Responsibilities- Teach Greek and Latin at all levels and provide courses of general appeal in Greco‑Roman studies.
- Bring an original and generative set of research projects, with a record of publication, teaching, and professional service for the tenured position.
- Advise senior thesis projects and direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels.
- Participate in the life of the college and the department, including service and interdisciplinary teaching opportunities such as the First‑Year Seminar Program.
- Ph.D. in classics or a related field by July 1, 2027.
- A well‑articulated research plan complementary to existing faculty expertise.
- Demonstrated ability to teach with distinction Greek and Latin and to engage undergraduate students.
- Excellent track record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service (for the tenured position).

Assistant Professor of Classics (tenure‑track): salary range $90,000–$125,000.
Associate Professor of Classics: salary range $105,000–$135,000.
Full Professor of Classics: salary range $120,000–$200,000.
