Professor of Classics - Tenure-Track or Tenured

Position Summary

The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two full‑time positions: an assistant professor (tenure‑track) and a tenured associate or full professor. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by that date.

• Develop and teach undergraduate courses in Greek and Latin, including general courses in Greco‑Roman studies.
• Maintain an original, generative research program in visual and material culture, rhetoric, law, democracy, social and cultural history, performance and reception, or knowledge production.
• Complete a teaching load of two courses per semester, normally three language courses per year.
• Provide writing and research mentorship at all undergraduate levels; advise senior thesis projects.
• Participate in the college and departmental life, including the First‑Year Seminar Program and other collaborations.
• For the tenured position, demonstrate a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.

• Ph.D. in classics or a related field completed by July 1, 2027.
• Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, especially in Greek and Latin instruction.
• Commitment to diversity and inclusive teaching and research practices.
• Ability to engage in cross‑disciplinary teaching and interdisciplinary research.
• For the tenure‑track position, a well‑articulated research plan suitable for tenure review.
• For the tenured position, a superior record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service.

The salary range for the assistant professor is $90,000 to $125,000; for a tenured associate professor $105,000 to $135,000; for a tenured full professor $120,000 to $200,000.
