Position Summary

The Interim Principal serves as the instructional and operational leader of Pelham Elementary School, fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where every student can thrive. The Interim Principal works collaboratively with students, families, faculty, staff, district leadership, and the Pelham community to advance academic excellence, social-emotional learning, and continuous school improvement.

Pelham Elementary School is a small, close-knit K–6 school that values strong relationships, personalized learning, and meaningful family partnerships. The Interim Principal is expected to build upon these strengths while ensuring the effective day-to-day operation of the school and supporting high-quality instruction for all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Leadership
  • Serve as the educational leader of the school by promoting high expectations for teaching and learning.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and support professional growth for instructional and non-instructional staff in accordance with Massachusetts educator evaluation regulations.
  • Promote instructional practices that support rigorous academic achievement and equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Lead the implementation of district curriculum, assessment, and instructional initiatives.
  • Analyze student achievement and other relevant data to inform instructional decisions and school improvement efforts.
  • Support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and evidence-based instructional interventions.
School Culture and Climate
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and welcoming school culture that reflects the district's commitment to equity, belonging, and student well-being.
  • Build trusting relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Promote restorative and developmentally appropriate approaches to student discipline.
  • Ensure a physically and emotionally safe learning environment.
  • Support student attendance initiatives and positive behavioral supports.
Personnel Leadership
  • Recruit, interview, recommend, supervise, and evaluate school personnel in collaboration with Human Resources and the Superintendent.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional feedback to staff.
  • Foster collaborative teamwork among educators and support staff.
  • Support professional learning aligned with district priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements, district policies, and applicable state and federal laws.
Family and Community Engagement
  • Develop strong partnerships with families through open, timely, and transparent communication.
  • Encourage meaningful family engagement in the educational process.
  • Collaborate with community organizations and district partners to enhance educational opportunities.
  • Represent the school positively within the Pelham community and the Amherst-Pelham Regional Public Schools.
School Operations
  • Oversee the daily operation of the school, including scheduling, supervision, safety, transportation coordination, and facility use.
  • Develop and monitor the school budget in collaboration with district administration.
  • Ensure compliance with all district policies, School Committee policies, state regulations, and federal requirements.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and school safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate school records and required reports.
Student Services
  • Collaborate with Student Services personnel to ensure appropriate supports for students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
  • Support implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 Plans, and other student support services.
  • Promote inclusive educational practices that support the success of every learner.
  • Work collaboratively with counselors, school psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other student support personnel.
Equity and Inclusion
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to educational equity and culturally responsive leadership.
  • Promote practices that ensure all students have access to high-quality educational opportunities.
  • Foster an environment where diversity is valued and respected.
  • Utilize data to identify and address opportunity gaps.
District Leadership
  • Serve as a member of the district administrative leadership team.
  • Participate in district committees, leadership meetings, and professional development.
  • Collaborate with other school leaders to ensure consistency and alignment across the district.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Qualifications Required
  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field.
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Principal/Assistant Principal License (PreK–6 or appropriate level), or eligibility for licensure.
