The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions – a full‑time tenure‑track assistant professor and a full‑time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.

Successful candidates will have a well‑articulated research plan, be committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching, and be able to teach Greek and Latin at all levels as well as courses of general appeal in Greco‑Roman studies. Opportunities for cross‑disciplinary teaching in the First‑Year Seminar Program and other collaborations exist. The teaching load is two courses per semester, normally three language courses per year.

Candidates should be able to direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels, advise senior thesis projects, and participate in the life of the college and the department.

We seek scholars whose research interests complement those already represented in the department and who can help expand and diversify our offerings. Areas of research specialization are open and include visual and material culture; rhetoric, law, and democracy; social and cultural history; performance and reception; and knowledge production (scientific and technical). Successful candidates for both positions are expected to have an original and generative set of research projects, and for the tenured position, a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.

Expected salary range: $90,000 to $125,000.
