Job Description Interim Special Education English Language Arts Teacher

Position Overview

Amherst Regional Middle School is seeking a qualified Interim Special Education English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher for the  school year. The successful candidate will provide specially designed instruction in ELA and work collaboratively with general education teachers, para educators, related service providers, families, and other members of the school community to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.

Essential Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and deliver specially designed instruction aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

  • Develop, adapt, and deliver differentiated instruction, assignments, and assessments.

  • Prepare and modify instructional materials to meet individual student needs.

  • Assess student work and provide timely and meaningful feedback.

  • Monitor student progress and maintain appropriate documentation.

  • Participate in IEP team meetings.

  • Provide written input for IEPs, progress reports, and other required documentation.

  • Serve as a liaison to families and maintain regular communication regarding student progress and needs.

  • Communicate and collaborate with outside professionals and agencies, as appropriate.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with para educators who support students in the classroom.

  • Co-plan and collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive instructional practices.

  • Consult and collaborate with related service providers, school counselors, and other mental health professionals.

  • Provide colleagues with guidance regarding special education requirements, instructional accommodations and modifications, student progress, assessment, and grading.

  • Provide effective small-group instruction and co-teaching.

  • Use assistive technology and other instructional tools to promote student access and achievement.

  • Maintain an effective classroom environment using positive behavior supports and classroom-management practices.

  • Perform other duties consistent with the position, as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Massachusetts educator license in special education appropriate for the grade level.

  • Valid Massachusetts educator license in English Language Arts for the appropriate grade level, or evidence of meeting applicable subject-matter competency requirements.

  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and IEP implementation.

  • Experience providing differentiated and specially designed instruction.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing small-group instruction and co-teaching in an inclusive educational setting.

  • Experience using assistive technology to support student learning.

  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.

  • Demonstrated multicultural competency and experience working with students and families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
