Overall Description
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering an educational opportunity located in Amherst, Massachusetts, with the option to work remotely. The program is part of the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (NE CASC) and focuses on advancing climate adaptation science and landscape ecology within the Appalachian region.
Research ProjectThe project aims to synthesize existing research and develop integrated approaches to landscape connectivity, biodiversity conservation, climate refugia, and nature-based solutions. It involves collaborating with partners across the eastern United States to strengthen cross-boundary understanding of ecological resilience and inform adaptation strategies.
Learning ObjectivesParticipants will gain advanced knowledge of climate adaptation science, landscape ecology, and applied conservation planning. Activities include:
- Literature synthesis
- Collaborative discussions with regional partners
- Application of ecological modeling for connectivity, climate refugia, and forest management
- Science communication and facilitation of workshops
- Development of scholarly presentations or manuscripts

Appointment Details•
Start Date:
Anticipated September 1, 2026 (flexible)

Initial one‑year appointment, renewable based on funding and performance

Annual stipend range: $60,000 – $70,000 (exact amount determined during interview).
Citizenship RequirementsOpen to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non‑U.S. citizens must meet appropriate immigration status criteria as outlined by USGS.
QualificationsCandidate must be currently pursuing or have received a master’s or doctoral degree in biology, ecology, planning, or a related physical or social science field.
Preferred Skills- Experience or interest in research at broader scales
- Excellent written and personal communication skills
- Experience working in the Appalachian ecoregion is highly desirable
