Job Summary

The Maintenance Worker assists in the maintenance, repair, and installation of all types of equipment, particularly food service equipment, acts as troubleshooter, and performs preventative maintenance. This position works under the functional supervision of a Technical Specialist II.

Essential Functions
  • Responds to routine maintenance and emergency calls.
  • Assists in repairs to support completion of assigned work.
  • Under instruction, performs the installation, repair, maintenance, and inspection of equipment to ensure proper operation of equipment necessary to provide services.
  • Maintains, inspects, and assists in the installation and repair of refrigeration and heating units in compliance with existing standards and codes for health and safety reasons.
  • Dismantles equipment and checks for worn or damaged parts; sharpens blades and makes required repairs for safety and efficiency.
  • Repairs specialty equipment which may require the welding of stainless steel and aluminum to keep equipment operational and avoiding costly repairs.
  • Assists journeyman with installation and relocation of major equipment and major construction and renovation projects according to specifications to minimize cost and become familiar with the equipment.
  • Assists in the erection of tents, barbecue pits, stages, and special equipment to meet the needs of special functions.
  • Assists in repairing of furniture and construction of cabinets and counters according to specifications to meet the needs of the department.
  • Determines supplies needed and may be required to pick up and deliver supplies following department procedures to facilitate the procurement of required supplies.
  • Climbs ladders, works from platforms, and operates in mechanical rooms.
  • Operates University‑owned motor vehicles to various work sites.
Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of handheld power tools, hand tools, and methods for their care and maintenance.
  • A valid Class D Driver's License.
  • Basic knowledge of methods practices and techniques involved in installation repair and maintenance of equipment and appliances.
  • Working knowledge of various building maintenance trades including the care and operation of tools and equipment used in such trades.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required in the operation of food service and other institutional equipment.
  • Working knowledge of furniture repair and cabinet making.
  • Ability to keep records and requisition materials and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards, precautions, and safety practices in these trades.
  • Skill in using small hand tools and handheld bench‑mounted power tools.
  • Ability to make simple estimates of time and materials.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, maintain harmonious working relationships, and remain calm in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work in a team setting, climb ladders and scaffolds, and exhibit physical stamina, endurance, mechanical aptitude, and manual dexterity.
  • Stamina to work in inclement weather and under adverse conditions when required.

This position is designated as essential personnel.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor environments, and requires frequent lifting, bending, tool use or equipment use. May involve work in confined spaces or at heights.

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement

Tuesday‑Saturday; 7am‑3pm

Salary Information

Pay Grade: AFSCME Grade 11
