AMHERST Lead Electrical Inspector Performs a variety of routine and complex technical duties in inspecting buildings to ensure compliance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Electrical Code and other related codes and regulations. Serves as senior Electrical Inspector, providing direction and training and reviewing the work of Town Inspectors, in collaboration with the Building Commissioner.

Responsibilities

Perform inspections of electrical installations within buildings and review construction plans to ensure compliance with Massachusetts Electrical Codes. Schedule inspections on a daily basis and maintain records of work completed. Issue electrical permits to qualified persons upon receipt of application and verification of insurance coverage. Maintain database of electrical permits and related insurance information. Contact Power Company for connection of services upon inspection approval.

Communicate with Power Company in the event of an emergency or to disconnect services when there is imminent danger.

Coordinate with the University and colleges for permitting, review and inspection of electrical projects. Respond to complaints regarding code compliance and illegal/defective wiring. Investigate complaints and resolve or refer to appropriate person. Respond to emergencies when requested to determine if electrically related. Work to resolve wiring related problems discovered through inspections and conduct research as necessary to determine solutions.

Respond to questions from the public, other departments, and other outside agencies regarding electrical codes and Town projects. Interpret codes and provide information as needed. Issue Code Interpretations. Enforce codes by issuing stop work orders, correction notices, and citations. Assist in searching for resolutions and follow up to ensure remediation. Authorize and issue certificates and permits as appropriate. Explain, interpret, and provide guidance regarding applicable codes to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and other stakeholders.

Provide direction and training to and review the work of Town Inspectors, in collaboration with the Building Commissioner. Perform other job‑related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School degree or equivalency plus five (5) years’ experience in electrical installation, inspection or design; or a combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position.
  • Valid Massachusetts Master Electrician License.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Driver’s License.
  • Thorough knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) and Massachusetts amendments and nationally recognized general construction codes.
  • Knowledge of operations, services and activities of a comprehensive electrical inspection program, occupational hazards and standard safety practices, of accepted methods of building construction for commercial and residential buildings, and of pertinent Federal, State and local laws and regulations, including the Massachusetts Electrical Code.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and enforce electrical codes and regulations, Town policies and procedures and pertinent Federal, State and local laws related to electrical construction standards.
  • Ability to read and understand complex building plans, blueprints, and specifications, apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to determine compliance with plans, codes, regulations, and standard construction practices.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports, communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and maintain effective working relationships with peers, the public, and with local contractors.
