Process Chemist Fulltime based in Amsterdam

Argent Energy, a European producer of sustainable second-generation biodiesel, is undergoing an exciting expansion at the Port of Amsterdam as part of the company's vision to decarbonise transport worldwide. With production capacity soon to triple, we are expanding our Lab team and seeking a new Process Chemist to join us.

About the job

We’re seeking a ‘hands on’ Process Chemist who will be responsible for the introduction of new technology and / or technical capability. Next to this, the Process Chemist will support the operations team with best practice and in-depth knowledge of chemistry and its application, to support the development of future and current Argent Energy operations.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Adjusting and tweaking recipe based on feedstock quality

  • Support and train (new) BDA operators to ensure maximal performance in respect of process chemistry control and analysis

  • Carry out lab trials and office-based investigations into processes and testing of the chemistry of the process to maximise yield/ output of the process.

  • Optimisation of current processes (if required via plant trials), suggesting and implementing any changes to raw materials and process parameters as necessary.

  • Develop and test methods to assess the production process.

  • Develop/improve process test methods and introduce them to operations

  • Drive process and product development being a champion of process improvement, improving yields and process capability and identifying any issues that may arise, developing appropriate solutions.

  • Carry out simple to complex experiments within production relating to the synthesis and manufacture of biodiesel and related products.

  • Assessment of feedstock, in-process and final-and by products or miscellaneous samples using various analytical techniques – wet chemistry, chromatography, analytical instrumentation

About You

To be successful in this position you should recognize yourself in the following points:

  • HBO Bachelor or above in Chemistry – Essential

  • Chemistry knowledge and its application in a manufacturing process (advantageous)

  • Knowledge of fats/oils and bio-based products (in particular biodiesel) and fuels (desirable)

  • Experience of developing or improving processes and procedures e.g. through Lean or CI tools

  • Proven experience of carrying out scaled up chemistry/biochemistry for batch and continuous processes (advantageous)

  • HAZOP (advantageous)

Technical skills required
  • Wet chemistry, chromatography and analytical instrumentation

  • Report Writing skills

  • SME – Site Chemistry lead

  • Risk Assessments

Behavioural skills required
  • Engage stakeholders in a meaningful way so that they buy in to new approaches

  • Problem solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to present complex data clearly & concisely

  • Attention to detail

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently

  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm under pressure
