Safety Manager

Physical Requirements:

Hours of Work:
Monday thru Friday, approximately 37 ½ hours per week, 7am – 3pm. Weekend, on-call or holiday work for safety audits, inspections, or accident investigations as necessary. Hours and schedule may vary depending on department needs.

Job Summary:

Safety Manager will be required to evaluate the safety policies at various locations, organize safety training for employees and report problems to management. Conduct routine inspections for compliance with OPWDD, OFPC and OSHA

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health and minimum of 10 years documented workplace safety management experience in a medium to large company.
  • Certification as a safety professional preferred (CSP, CIH or ASP).
  • Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer for General Industry required.
  • Specialist in General Industry Certification through OSHA Training Institute or other nationally recognized safety organization required.
  • Working knowledge of OSH regulations required, including but not limited to: OSHA General Industry (1910) and Construction (1926) Standards, NFPA Life Safety Code and NFPA 72, federal and NYS DOT commercial motor vehicle law, NYS Article 19A for passenger transport, SARA Title III reporting and chemical inventory management and OPWDD regulations:
    Mental Hygiene law; 14 NYCRR 633-635.
  • Documented professional experience with federal regulating agency representatives and management of Worksite inspections and records audits.
  • Proficiency in personal computer use, including the development of training programs with PowerPoint, injury and accident statistical data and trend analysis, agency, department and NYS 19A specific software systems.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English Language
  • Major Responsibilities:

  • Management of injury prevention and safety compliance programs at 62 agency locations. Identification of root cause of incidents and corrective action recommendations to eliminate or minimize safety and health hazards.
  • Periodic inspections of facilities and programs to ensure safe conditions and compliance with all applicable safety regulations/standards and agency policies.
  • Develop, support and provide OSH compliant programs and consultative recommendations to the Regional Safety Committee and agency administration. Participate in regulatory inspections and audits as needed on state and federal level.
  • Provide collaborative consultation on safety concerns for agency managers, supervisors, staff and family members.
  • Conduct OSH training for agency staff and administration in collaboration with the Staff Training department.
  • Supervise statistical data for injury and illness records. Review and interpret injury data for the OSHA 300 log and verify accuracy. Participate in Worker Compensation case reviews with carrier.
  • Provide safety awareness materials through publishing periodic safety newsletters and articles for distribution.
  • Supervise agency fire safety program and participate in site inspections with NYS OFPC to ensure compliance with NFPA.
  • Develop training programs and conduct training for administration on NFPA 101A, Evacuation Difficulty Scores and applicable OPWDD regulations and administrative memorandums.
  • Supervise transportation drivers for compliance with NYS Article 19A and CMV driver files under the federal and state DOT regulations.
  • Manage all agency vehicle drivers and review NYS DMV License Event Notifications for compliance with Transportation policy.
  • Process vehicle insurance claims; communicate with insurance carrier to develop risk management strategies.
  • Provide hazard analysis for manufacturing equipment, processes and Job Safety Analysis. Evaluate prospective manufacturing operations for feasibility, regulatory requirements, equipment hazard assessments and Job Safety Analysis.
  • Review chemical inventories and SDS from all sites to ensure compliance with environmental reporting regulations.
