Position: Apprentice Electrician - 309A Construction & Maintenance

Our Substation group is currently looking to add Apprentice Electricians – 309A Construction & Maintenance to our growing team.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, the 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician Apprentice performs site electrical construction activities individually or as part of small, dedicated work groups, under the direction of a certified 309A Journeyperson as appropriate to the apprentice's level. In this role, the Apprentice carries out a range of electrical installation, termination, and testing activities on site, ensuring project construction is executed effectively and safely.

The Apprentice is also responsible for identifying potential changes or field issues as they arise and bringing them to the Foreman's attention. You will work closely with the Foreman to establish timelines for work activities and to confirm when work fronts have been completed. This is a hands‑on opportunity to build your hours and develop your skills toward your Certificate of Qualification while working on medium‑to‑high‑voltage construction projects.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Comply with and follow Valard's Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Inform the supervision team of the equipment and materials required for the work fronts.
  • Work with new-hire employees to ensure they understand and adhere to Valard's safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the dedicated work group complies with Valard's project procedures, safety program requirements, and construction quality practices.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere within the group.
  • Address any crew issues or conflicts with the Site Foreman as they arise.
  • Work with the on‑site Safety Advisor to address any safety concerns brought forward by crews or the Client.
  • Manage material deliveries and inventory as per the assigned work fronts, identifying any potential risks and bringing them to the Site Supervisor's and Foreman's attention.
  • Ensure the crew supports the Valard Quality Management team's requirements as instructed by the Foreman and Site Supervisor.
  • Ensure Valard's equipment and tools are used in a safe and professional manner and accounted for daily; tag any defective tools and equipment out of service and bring them to the Foreman's attention.
  • Work under the direction of a certified 309A Journeyperson to understand scope and identify changes as they arise.
  • Maintain a daily diary for record‑keeping purposes.
Technical Scope
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) relevant to work tasks.
  • Conduct thorough tailboards, assign tasks appropriately, discuss hazards, and identify controls.
  • Select appropriate equipment based on the relevant work tasks.
  • Inspect and confirm that rigging has been set up safely and correctly.
  • Route, ground, and bond for steel structures independently.
  • Review and comprehend blueprints, installation manuals, and QA documentation.
  • Identify equipment to complete bus work installation and install insulators accordingly.
  • Determine placement of lifting equipment and lay out steel structures accordingly.
  • Complete quality inspections and torque checks.
  • Determine the layout of materials, complete installation of required high‑voltage equipment per drawings, and make adjustments as required.
  • Perform excavation for underground raceways if required.
  • Ensure foundations are completed as per design and specifications.
  • Test cables at the appropriate time and route and enter cable into equipment safely and correctly.

Must be a registered 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician apprentice (any level/term) with Skilled Trades Ontario.

  • In‑school training and logged on‑the‑job hours must be up to date for the apprentice's current level.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of various construction disciplines, safety regulations, and quality control.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within small work groups safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, installation manuals, and QA documentation.
  • Able to accommodate a field‑based position with multiple/rotating shifts based on the project schedule.
