Marathon Petroleum Company LP, a recognized leader in the energy industry, is currently hiring a full-time Lab Technician at our Anacortes Refinery
.

This role offers immediate responsibility, hands-on experience, and a competitive benefits package
. The position operates on a 12-hour rotating day/night shift schedule

As a Lab Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting the facility’s quality assurance and production goals. This position reports directly to the Lab Supervisor. Lab Technicians work in a safety-sensitive environment and must successfully complete a rigorous pre-employment assessment process, drug/alcohol and medical screenings, and a background check.

Key Responsibilities
  • Understands and adheres to all written analytical and safety Standard Operating Procedures established by MPC
  • Understands and adheres to and maintains all Safety, SQC and test method procedures
  • Participate actively in safety meetings, including surfacing hazards/concerns and suggestions for improvement
  • Dispose of all samples per site procedures
  • Enter routine sample results accurately into LIMS as soon as practical and special sample results as soon as obtained. Communicates promptly with customers
  • Operates as an effective laboratory team. Each member’s actions reflect the team and have a direct effect on how the lab, the refinery, and the MPC organization achieve their mission
  • Makes proper relief in work area. Communicates pending analyses, instrument problems, SQC concerns, operational issues affecting the lab, and off-spec results
  • Reads e-mail, area notes and applicable orders as appropriate
  • Operates fume hoods and hood sashes per MPC standard
  • Completes all required training and CBT modules by due date
  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly to maintain a high level of safety and efficiency
  • Effectively validates results generated prior to reporting
  • Reviews SQC chart after each standard entry for the associated analysis. Completes corrective action forms for out-of-control points, attempts to resolve SQC alarms according to skill level, and communicates to appropriate chemist and/or supervisor
  • Perform daily QC checks on lab instrumentation to ensure quality assurance
  • Inform supervision when lab supplies are running low. Maintains stock of consumable supplies in each lab
  • Prepare chemical reagents needed to perform routine testing
  • Perform physical and chemical testing on various hydrocarbon samples using a variety of techniques
  • Be responsible for making hand blends to perform routine or special testing
  • Understand and maintain laboratory documentation practices
  • Perform required environmental testing for wastewater permits and generate the necessary reports
  • Trains Laboratory Technicians in the use of instruments/new methods
  • Perform sample collection as applicable
  • Support standards, calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair instrumentation as applicable
Education and Experience
  • A minimum of 4 college level courses in Chemistry and 2 college level Chemistry labs required.
  • Experience in QC/production laboratory in petroleum refining or petrochemical industry, or analytical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the testing methods and chemical substances used in a refining lab is ideal.
  • Must be willing to work a 12-hour rotating shift (Days/Nights) on a seven (7) on, seven (7) off schedule including weekends, holidays, and must be available for overtime. The current schedule for days is 6am - 6pm and nights 6pm - 6am.
