Controller – Construction

Location: Anaheim, CA

A growing mechanical contractor is seeking a hands-on Controller to bring the company’s accounting function in-house and build out a strong accounting team. This position will oversee the company’s financial operations while remaining directly involved in construction accounting, WIP reporting, job costing, and project financials.

The ideal candidate will have construction accounting experience and the leadership ability to establish processes, build a team, and create a scalable accounting function. This person will work closely with company ownership and project management to improve financial visibility, cost control, forecasting, and project profitability.

• Lead the transition from an outsourced accounting function to an internal accounting department.
• Build, hire, and develop the accounting team as the company grows.
• Establish and improve accounting processes, procedures, internal controls, and reporting systems.
• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and month-end close.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and management reports.
• Manage and participate in WIP reporting, job costing, and project financial analysis

• Monitor project budgets, actual costs, committed costs, billings, revenue recognition, and projected profitability.
• Work closely with Project Managers to identify cost variances, potential overruns, and changes in projected project margins.
• Review job cost reports and provide financial insight to company leadership and project teams.
• Assist with forecasting and financial planning for active construction projects.
• Monitor change orders, retainage, billing, collections, and project cash flow.
• Ensure accurate accounting for construction contracts and project-related transactions.
• Coordinate with external CPA firms, auditors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners as needed.
• Provide financial reporting and analysis to company ownership and senior leadership.
• Develop the accounting infrastructure and reporting processes needed to support continued company growth.

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction accounting experience strongly preferred

• Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior-level construction accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of WIP, job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project financials
  .
• Experience analyzing project profitability, cost-to-complete, under billings/over billings, and budget-to-actual performance.
• Proven ability to build, lead, and develop an accounting team.
• Experience establishing accounting processes and systems within a growing organization.
• Strong understanding of general ledger, financial statements, AP/AR, and month-end close.
• Experience working directly with Project Managers and operational teams.
• Strong Excel and financial reporting skills.
• Experience with construction accounting software/ERP systems preferred.
• Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to work in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate will come from a general contractor, mechanical contractor, electrical contractor, plumbing contractor, or other specialty construction company and understand both traditional accounting and the project-level financials that drive construction businesses.
