Position: Communications Dispatcher (Entry-Level)

About the Organization

East Bay Regional Park District Public Safety Department serves over 25 million visitors each year across 73 parks covering 126,809 acres in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The department provides law enforcement, fire services, a 24‑hour 911 communications center, and specialized units such as marine, aerial, and equestrian patrol.

Position Overview

Entry‑level Communications Dispatcher at Public Safety Headquarters in Castro Valley, CA. The role coordinates dispatch for police, fire, and park operations, supports the 911 communications center, and performs clerical duties on a rotational basis.

Responsibilities
  • Receive telephone and radio communications from the public, employees, and partner agencies; process 911 and non‑emergency calls.
  • Analyze situations and dispatch appropriate police, fire, or park units.
  • Transmit and receive radio messages; monitor frequencies and rebroadcast relevant information.
  • Make requests for emergency services and coordinate with other agencies.
  • Maintain message logs, type reports and records, and process tickets and field reports.
  • Operate and adjust radio and computer equipment; update databases and data entry.
  • Assist in off‑site and field communication with mobile incident command and evacuation operations.
  • Serve as Communications Supervisor in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.
  • Two years of recent responsible work experience.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Typing speed of at least 40 net words per minute.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multi‑task, handle emergencies, and follow instructions.
  • Good hearing, eyesight, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to learn laws, regulations, and procedures of the public safety department.
  • Proficiency in English.
Other Requirements
  • Pass a Level 3 background check.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Wear the park district uniform when required.
  • Obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within the probationary period.
  • Union representation is available through the Park Association.
