The Position

Basic function:
Terms of employment: as needed basis, 5.75 hours or 6 hours/day. Anywhere between 8 a.m.
- 3:30 p.m.
Positions allocated to this class are assigned to assist a teacher, or specialist in providing academic, social and community based instruction and assistance to individuals or small groups of students with a wide range of significant disabilities including autism and/or intellectual disabilities. This position performs special duties relative to the needs of each special education student in addition to performing the regular duties typical of the Substitute Instructional Assistant (Classroom).
This position serves as a Substitute Instructional Assistant to teachers. Full responsibility for appropriate instruction, training, curriculum materials and evaluation procedures remain with the teacher.
Minimum qualifications:
Education:
Consistent with No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 and other related legislation, candidates for this classification must meet the following standards:
The equivalent of graduation from high school and one of the following:
1. Completion of at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at an institution of higher education;
Or
2. Attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher degree;
Or
3. Meeting a rigorous standard of quality by receiving a passing score in an examination administered by the Personnel Commission which demonstrates the knowledge and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.

Observes and supports behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures; provides support for students who are fully included in regular education classes.
