City of Anaheim Planning and Building Department – Plans Examiner II (Electrical)

We seek a highly qualified and customer‑savvy Plans Examiner II – Electrical to conduct electrical plan checks. The examiner will perform professional and technical plan checking of residential, multiple‑dwelling, industrial, and commercial building plans for conformity with pertinent building and safety codes and related regulations, and to perform a variety of plan‑checking tasks. Candidates must have professional journey‑level experience in plan review and/or inspections of buildings and systems for compliance with the California Electrical Code and standards, supplemented by college‑level coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related field.

Possession of a Plans Examiner Certificate from any national or regional agency is required within twelve (12) months of appointment and is a condition of continued employment in this classification. Ideal candidates will possess electrical plan‑check experience from a municipal planning agency.

Responsibilities (selected):

  • Perform technical plan checking of residential, commercial, and industrial building plans and designs for overall code compliance, including fire, life safety, structural safety, energy, and accessibility requirements.
  • Respond to inquiries from engineers, architects, designers, and the public regarding technical code requirements and City building standards.
  • Advise permit applicants whose plans are not in conformance with required codes and indicate where designs do not comply.
  • Conduct field inspections as required and advise Building Division personnel and other City staff.
  • Coordinate plan‑check activities with other City departments and outside agencies.
  • Evaluate construction plans for issuance of permits and collection of applicable fees.
  • Research records and files for public dissemination and plan‑review data collection; develop written reports and correspondence as required.
  • Accurately input work and records into computerized system(s) for tracking and reporting.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Professional journey‑level experience in plan review and/or inspection of buildings and systems for compliance with the California Electrical Code and related standards.
  • College‑level coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related field; a Bachelor’s degree is desirable.
  • Solid knowledge of electrical design and construction principles, building construction practices, fire‑rated construction, and advanced methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including California building safety codes and local ordinances.
  • Customer‑service principles and practices.
  • Ability to review and check complex plans and specifications, interpret code requirements, respond to technical questions, and resolve plan‑review issues with property owners, contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and others with tact, diplomacy, and good customer‑service practices.
  • Valid California driver’s license; possession of a Plans Examiner Certificate from any national or regional agency required within twelve (12) months of appointment; registration as a Professional Engineer desirable.
