As a Business Development Manager (BDM) for Bunzl Grocery, you will analyze geographic markets, identify target customers, and develop selling strategies for successful account generation. You must create a pipeline of new opportunities and consistently meet business development and sales goals by qualifying, cultivating, and closing prospects. Your mandate is to sell Bunzl’s comprehensive catalog of disposable items—including paper and plastic packaging, to-go packaging, janitorial supplies, and other food‑service items—to grocery stores and independent food markets across Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Bay Area.
You will report to the RVP of the region.
- Create a new business pipeline by identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and closing prospects through outcome‑selling methods.
- Assess estimated sales volume and success probability to inform stakeholders.
- Develop selling strategies within Bunzl’s framework for successful account acquisition.
- Maintain consistent outreach, report activity in CRM, and update contact and account information weekly.
- Achieve financial goals and new‑business metrics on a monthly basis.
- Lead contract negotiations, coordinate complex decision‑making, and overcome objections to secure new business.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to develop value‑based proposals, understanding client outcomes and solutions.
- Provide weekly and monthly reporting on pipeline, sales activity, and relevant metrics.
- Identify and attend trade‑shows, conferences, and events that generate qualified leads; report on activity.
- Stay abreast of market trends, competitors, retail prospects, and business‑development best practices.
- Support other sales and marketing functions as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent mandatory;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - 7+ years of success in sales or business development, client‑facing.
- Retail experience preferred, with emphasis on grocery.
- Self‑starter who prioritizes opportunities throughout the sales cycle.
- Strong financial analysis skills.
- Leadership experience or peer‑leadership demonstrated.
- Excellent presentation and stakeholder influence abilities.
- Capability to derive actionable insights from data and articulate selling stories.
- Knowledge of retail supply chain, distribution, operations, or e‑commerce preferred.
- Mandatory travel of 50‑75% within the region.
Bunzl salary range: $100,000‑$150,000 (+ bonus and car allowance), based on experience, education, and location. Applications are still being accepted.
