What You Will Be Doing
This position provides administrative support to the Office of Public Advocacy’s Public Defense section in Anchorage. Tasks include filing legal documents, formatting and proof‑reading filings, processing mail, monitoring the email inbox for court notices, organizing paper and electronic files, calendaring deadlines for guardians, answering phone calls, and maintaining office equipment and supplies.

The Public Guardian section offers professional court‑appointed guardians and conservators for incapacitated adults in a fast‑paced environment that values client protection and teamwork.

The Working EnvironmentThe office is located downtown Anchorage, adjacent to the courthouse, with free parking and nearby restaurants. The Law Office Assistant supports a larger team of professional guardians.
QualificationsWe seek candidates who possess the following competencies:
- Adaptability – can adjust work plans and apply critical thinking in a changing environment.
- Attention to Detail – thorough and conscientious when performing work.
- Clerical skills – knowledge of filing, data entry, record maintenance, shorthand, and form completion.
- Computer proficiency – use of computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems.
Education and experience requirements:
- One year as a Law Office Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska, or completion of a formally established training plan, or one year of law‑office or equivalent administrative experience.
- A bachelor’s degree in a legal field may substitute for required experience.
- An associate’s degree or vocational‑technical certification in a legal‑support career may substitute for up to 6 months of experience.
- Post‑secondary education in a non‑legal field may substitute for up to 6 months of experience.
- Vocational‑technical certification in business support may substitute for up to 3 months of experience.
Special note:
Most positions require a Notary Public upon hire and a criminal background check to meet security requirements. Overtime, weekends, or holidays may be required.
