The Northern Light, UAA’s student‑run newspaper, is currently recruiting for a Student Reporter. If you have an interest in the field of newspaper reporting, we invite you to apply.
ResponsibilitiesReporters write stories for The Northern Light covering news, features, arts and entertainment, or sports. Working for The Northern Light offers students a unique opportunity to learn about publishing and the news media. Staff have access to industry professionals, professional equipment, and chances to submit material for awards. The paper publishes stories online northernlight.org and in print throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community.
Qualifications- Excellent writing and research skills.
- Interest in the news media and willingness to attend events, interview subjects, and develop story ideas.
- Excellent communication and time‑management skills, with the ability to work remotely if needed.
- Team player who gives and receives constructive feedback.
- The ability to write quickly and meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail to avoid publication of false or misleading information.
- Open to working collaboratively with editors on written stories.
- Eligibility for student employment: a. Enrolled in the University of Alaska system with at least six credit hours in the current semester; or b. Enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester; c. Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, good academic standing, or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer;
d. Students in non‑traditional programs considered eligible with approval of the Senior Student Services officer; e. Must provide evidence of enrollment; f. Position reappointment contingent on progress toward degree completion and performance evaluation.
- Student assistant 2 position: 8‑12 hours per week, pay $13.03/hour.
- Open to undergraduate students only.
- Position is pooled; applications reviewed as needed.
- Work may be on‑site, hybrid, or remote under university discretion.
