Job Summary
Alaska’s News Source is looking for a versatile, news‑driven journalist who is equally at home in the field, stacking, writing, creating newscasts, and producing breaking news in the control room. As an MMJ/Producer, you’ll spend two days a week leading our newscasts as a producer and three days each week reporting in the field — gathering, shooting, and delivering stories that matter to and impact Alaskans.
This is not a role for someone who wants to do one thing; it’s a role for someone who loves all of it! The MMJ/Producer schedule is 2:30 PM‑10:30 PM Wed‑Sun.
- Produce 2 newscasts per day with strong story selection, compelling teases, and clean show flow
- Make real‑time editorial decisions during breaking news situations with minimal supervision
- Collaborate with anchors, meteorologists, and directors to deliver a polished, audience‑first broadcast
- Write and edit copy, teases, and anchor reads under deadline pressure
- Write and post copy daily on all digital platforms as new information is learned and throughout your assigned shift. This includes copy for web, social media, our news app, our digital desk/CTV, and within our television newscasts on broadcast
- Research, pitch, shoot, write, edit, and present original news packages and live reports
- Gather content with a multi‑platform mindset—thinking about what works on social and digital, not just on air
- File social content including vertical videos from the field in real time when news warrants it
- Develop and maintain sources across the state of Alaska
- Contribute story ideas that serve our broadcast and digital audiences
- Experience in both broadcast producing and MMJ reporting
- Strong editorial judgment, especially in breaking news situations
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines simultaneously
- A digital‑aware mindset: you think about your audience on every platform, not just the one watching at 6:00 PM
- Excellent writing skills, tight, active, conversational broadcast copy
- Self‑motivated and dependable; weekends require someone who leads without being managed
- Must have a desire to win, a positive attitude, and the ability to reflect on your work and apply feedback
- Ability to work a combination of dayside and nightside shifts, as well as overtime when warranted for breaking news or special coverage
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a company vehicle
- A journalism‑related degree (or similar) is preferred
- Must be able to carry 35+ pounds of gear and be experienced in shooting and editing unique content. We have photographers and editors to partner with on select assignments.
