Orientation Leader

The Orientation Leader (OL) is an integral part of the new student orientation team within the First-Year

Experience of fice and facilitates the integration of new students and families into the University of Alaska Anchorage. Responsibilities of this position include:

* Serve as a positive peer leader and mentor for first-year students at the University of Alaska Anchorage

* Lead Howl Days new student orientation sessions for incoming students (present information and lead activities)

* Lead campus tours both in-person and virtually

* Reach out and connect with prospective and incoming students via phone and email

* Assist with the development and implementation of new student orientation activities

* Coordinate and facilitate Seawolves Connect, a peer mentorship program that allows students to meet 1-on-1 with an Orientation Leader

* Work in partnership with UAA campus partners to support students in understanding course placement options and registering for classes

* Serve as a campus resource by learning and sharing information about departments and resources across campus

* Other duties as assigned

We are looking for student employees who have high energy and great communication skills to work with new students and assist with Howl Days orientation events.

* Requires intermediate knowledge of computers and software

* Requires ability to work on computer and phone for extended periods

* Ability to learn from and relate respectfully with people of your own culture as well as those from other cultures

* Desire to develop leadership skills

* Be an effective communicator and have the ability to demonstrate excellent customer service skills

* Can lead projects and make challenging decisions when the supervisor is not available

* Ability to develop and implement new student engagement opportunities with the support of a supervisor

* Ability to work with limited supervision

* Be able to lift up to 25 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation

* Must have networking abilities to serve as a liaison with various departments and resources on and off campus

* Must be able to serve as an ambassador for the university

* Must have good verbal and written communication skills

* With training, must be able to lead, plan, and organize orientation program sessions

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment as an Orientation Leader, an applicant must:

1. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment or

a. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters;

2. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.

3. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.

4. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Position Details:

* This position is open to undergraduate students only.

* This student position is a Level 2 Step 16 and earns $15.26 per hour.

* Orientation Leaders work May 5, 2026 through August 22, 2026.

* Full participation (40hr/wk) in training May 5-29, 2026 is required.

* During the summer, Orientation Leaders may work up to 40 hours per week, and are required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.

* Participation in all Howl Days Orientations are required.

* Time off exceptions can only be made with prior approval by the supervisor.

* After the summer orientation season ends, some Orientation Leaders will have the option of working throughout the school year as well. Orientation Leaders who are invited to continue working during the school year work 15-20 hours per week
