Learning Assistants (LAs) are UAA students who support, guide, and assist fellow students in high demand courses. LAs are embedded in 'gateway' courses that are critical for students to progress in their chosen degree path. Gateway courses require students to demonstrate comprehension of course material so that they are prepared to complete other major requirements. LAs help students in these courses articulate, defend and modify their ideas by facilitating conversations, discussions, and in-class activities.

LAs work closely with their Lead Faculty (the faculty member teaching the course the LA is assigned to) and attend onboarding and training with other LAs. LAs are employees of the Learning Commons which is the home of many free peer learning services including tutoring, coaching, and more.

Available courses change every semester. In Spring 2026 there may be availability in: ECON, MATH, WRTG, BIOL, PSY, and more.

Learning Assistants facilitate discussions, group work and in-class activities among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement.
