Job Summary
The Teacher Expert, Title I Mentor assists selected schools by serving as a mentor for first and second year teaching staff in Title I schools. The mentor helps in providing induction, professional support, and guided introduction into the roles and responsibilities of a certificated teacher in a Title I environment. The teacher expert remains abreast of current learning and research in all areas of instruction and pedagogy.

The mentor encourages teachers to apply principles of learning and effective teaching methods that enable students to be actively engaged in the learning process as well as supporting the mentees in developing the professional skills and resilience needed to be effective in a Title I instructional environment. The teacher expert provides instructional classroom support through recommending, demonstrating, and/or modeling appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet the learning needs of all students.

The teacher expert works collaboratively with site level administrators to support mentees. The teacher expert reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Federal Programs.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  • A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  • Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
    • a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
    • a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
    • passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
    • an endorsement in the content area of this position
  • The following are preferred:
  • A master's degree
  • Evidence of the following skills and abilities:
    • Leadership skills and qualities
    • Ability to provide professional development opportunities to colleagues in a variety of formats
    • Interpersonal, problem solving, and organizational skills
