Physical Education teachers create a flexible and supportive education program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. The teacher provides instruction at an appropriate grade level while establishing an effective rapport with students as well as parents and staff members. In accordance with each student's ability, teachers motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation.
The teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal. This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on the Labor Relations Department website. The position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs.
Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
- A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.

- a posted degree in physical education
- a posted minor in physical education
- passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores in either Physical

- Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology for instruction, record‑keeping, and research.
- Proficient in facilitating, monitoring, and assessing student learning.
- Strong communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to adapt curriculum and instruction to meet diverse student needs.
- Describe and apply a philosophy of education in practice.
- Understand how students learn and develop, applying that knowledge in practice.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for effective learning.
- Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, work time, and assessment.
- Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, setting clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Teach students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics.
- Know the content area and how to teach it.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small group instruction.
- Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
- Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Facilitate, monitor, and assess student learning; evaluate academic and social growth, and prepare progress reports.
- Identify pupil needs, make referrals, and develop strategies for individual education plans.
- Maintain a learning environment where all students are engaged.
- Supervise student environment, students, and volunteers.
- Partner with parents, families, and the community; communicate regularly through newsletters, notes, phone calls, and conferences.
- Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing; required to reach with hands and arms; occasionally lift items less than 40 lbs. Must understand vague and implicit instructions, recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. Must manage stress associated with diverse cultures, personalities and work styles.

Additional Job InformationEmployees must possess the ability to read and write in English and communicate in English with staff and the public. Background checks are required, including a criminal background check and, for certificated positions, a check through the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development. This position may require working in ASD facilities on military installations.
