Salary: B00/00 to B72/08 ($61,454 to $88,919), DOE
Classroom teachers create a flexible and supportive education program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. The teacher provides instruction at an appropriate grade level while establishing an effective rapport with students as well as parents and staff members. In accordance with each student's ability, teachers motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation.
The teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal. The position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. The position’s grade level, content area taught, and work site may change depending on student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS);
positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS); positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
- A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
- Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
- a posted degree in the content area of this position;
- a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
- passing Praxis Subject Assessment scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
- a certificate endorsement in the content area of this position.

- Understand how students learn and develop and apply that knowledge in your practice.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, work time, and assessment.
- Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, projects, and other activities to communicate these objectives to students.
- Teach students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics.
- Know your content area and how to teach it.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional material and provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to student needs.
- Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
- Use current technology to enhance instruction, record‑keeping, and research.
- Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
- Facilitate, monitor, and assess student learning.
- Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
- Identify pupil needs, make appropriate referrals, and develop strategies for individual education plans.
- Create and maintain a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged and contributing members.
- Create classroom environments conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity and interests.
- Create learning environments through functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and student work exhibits.
- Supervise student environment, students, and volunteers.
- Partner with parents, families, and community.
- Communicate regularly with parents by newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.
- Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Requires visual abilities, frequent reaching, occasional lifting of objects less than 40 lbs. Ability to understand vague instructions, recall facts, manage conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. Must manage stress of working with students, parents, and diverse staff in a dynamic environment.
