The University of Alaska Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation seeks Technical Expert Field Assistants to support land‑based outdoor recreation courses on an as‑needed basis. Course offerings include activities such as ice climbing, rock climbing, crevasse rescue techniques, backcountry skiing, and mountaineering.
ResponsibilitiesWork with a Lead Instructor to provide field experiences to students.
Maintain course safety and take responsibility for the class if the Lead Instructor is incapacitated.
Demonstrate exceptional proficiency in course content and provide expert field support.
Qualifications- Physical fitness, personal gear requirements, and course prerequisites that exceed the minimum standards for the specific course.
- Strong technical skills in the chosen activity, surpassing the level of instruction that will be taught. Demonstrable through skill tests, verification from qualified professionals, or applicable certifications.
- Leadership or guiding experience as a paid or unpaid leader in the activity within the past two years.
- Pedagogical or teaching competencies: college‑level writing; sequenced teaching methods; feedback and formal evaluation; presentation and speaking skills; varied teaching styles; ability to teach adult learners and participants with diverse abilities, experience levels, and cultural backgrounds.
- Minimum qualification certifications and experience as an active participant (see below).
- Ice Climbing – Level I avalanche training recommended; AMGA Top Rope Site Manager Certified recommended.
- Rock Climbing – AMGA Top Rope Site Manager Certified recommended.
- Crevasse Rescue Techniques – Level I avalanche training recommended.
- Mountaineering – Level I avalanche training required.
- Skiing Alaska's Backcountry – Level II avalanche training required.
- Winter Camping Alaska – Level I avalanche training required.
- Backpacking – Level I avalanche training required.
- Current Wilderness First Responder certification or department‑accepted equivalent if working in a non‑urban environment.
- Current first aid/CPR certification if working in an urban environment.
- Other certifications identified by industry standards and the HPER Department Chair.
- A minimum of three years of active participation in the course activity and continued participation within the past two years.
- Winter skills and winter camping experience if leading a non‑urban overnight outing.
This is a part‑time, adjunct, non‑represented temporary position. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and the type of work assigned. The position is pooled; applications are reviewed as needed. Submission of an application does not guarantee review or a job offer.
