The UAA Learning Commons Writing Center (WC) is recruiting Student Writing Consultants. The mission of the WC is to promote the use of academic writing in all disciplines as a tool for learning, communication, self-expression, and critical thinking.
Writing consultants work closely with students, faculty, and administrators to help them become capable, successful writers. While most work is one‑on‑one with a student, consultants may occasionally deliver presentations, lead or support workshops, or participate in group‑learning programs. Consultants are expected to attend regular training sessions to improve their support skills. The position offers remote and in‑person work options and is paid at level 2 student employee ($15.26 per hour) for up to 20 hours per week, depending on need and availability.
Minimum Qualifications- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in Writing/English coursework
- Successfully completed Writing 211, 212, 213, 214 or an equivalent Writing/English composition course
- Enrollment in the university system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester, or for inter‑semester employment, have completed six or more UA credit hours in the preceding semester and plan to enroll for six or more in the next semester
- Class attendance not interfered by work hours
- At least a 2.0 cumulative GPA
- Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate or graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax
Prior tutoring experience is preferred, but not required. Training will be provided upon hire.
