Position: IMMERSION TEACHER

Under the general guidance of the Nikaitchuat Director, accomplishes the strategic objectives of the Language program by instructing students in the Iñupiaq Language in an immersion school environment at Nikaitchuat Iḷisaġviat. Communicates on student progress and works with parents in defining educational goals for students. Ensures linguistic, cultural, and educational services with students in tribal community-based setting in compliance with tribal, state, and federal regulations and policies.

Promotes the organization’s mission and vision and demonstrates integrity, professionalism, accountability, cooperation with and consideration of others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Participates in the daily and weekly classroom lesson planning and preparation.
  • Maintains records to track student attendance and learning.
  • Helps with all aspects of immersion education planning, curriculum and teaching methods.
  • Ensures the safety of all students in the classroom.
  • Participates in parent and family communication regarding student progress and support for families in speaking Iñupiaq in the home environment.
  • Collaborates with parents and staff in defining educational goals for students and families.
  • Participates in regular parent meetings and language nests.
  • Strengthens knowledge of lñupiaq language with continuing education, courses, and training on an ongoing basis.
  • Tracks student learning, behavior, and proficiency levels and designs individual learning plans to accommodate needs.
  • Maintains student files and records with confidentiality and the proper disposition of closed files.
  • Organizes and prepares teaching materials needed for classroom activities.
  • Assists with Nikaitchuat Steering Committee and other committees to help in the development of the school, lñupiaq learning programs, and revitalization of the language.
  • Helps maintain student files and records with confidentiality and the proper disposition of closed files.
  • Assists with regular school and administrative tasks, such as copying, filing, record-keeping, and cleaning.
  • Builds and fosters effective working relationships with others.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSBILITY
  • None
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education, Education, lñupiaq or Alaska Native Studies, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience involving education, bilingual education, or early childhood education.
  • Fluency in the Inupiaq language, with ability to speak, write, and teach lñupiaq.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a background investigation and drug test.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check under the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C., 3301. Cannot have been found guilty of, charged with, received a deferred sentence, received a conditional discharge of, or entered a plea of not contest to, or entered a plea of guilty to any one felony or misdemeanor crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, exploitation or sexual contact;

    prostitution; or crimes committed against person(s) or children.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Traditional forms of government and tribal customs and traditions.
  • Applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Policies, functions, and responsibilities of the Native Village of Kotzebue, Northwest Arctic Borough, and Alaskan Native lifestyle, culture, traditions, history, and needs.
  • Guidelines, principles, practices, trends, terminology, methods, and techniques pertaining to pedagogy, education, childhood development, and special education.

Skill in:

  • Planning, directing, and leading complex projects.
  • Education curriculum development and implementation
  • Presenting, explaining, and teaching using differing methods depending on the student.
  • Classroom and records management.
