Job Summary

An Elementary Chinese Language Immersion Teacher teaches elementary school subjects in Chinese and Chinese language to elementary students. Subjects taught include 2nd and 3rd grade Science, Social Studies, and Chinese Literary, which is Chinese Language instruction including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and handwriting. Specific grade assignments may change based on the needs of the school district. Teachers create a flexible elementary grade program and a learning environment favorable to growth, establish rapport with students, motivate them to develop essential skills, and maintain relationships with parents and staff.

They apply a philosophy of education relevant to practice. A valid Alaska educator certificate is required. Workdays are based on the AEA negotiated pay scale. Positions may change in grade level, content area, and work site depending on enrollment and staffing needs. Fully FTE positions are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS); positions from 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS);

positions 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements

State of Alaska Teacher Certificate: evidence that the applicant has complied with Alaska Statute 14.20.010 and may be employed as a certified teacher.

Evidence of content knowledge:

a. Posted degree in the content area of this position.
b. Posted minor in the content area of this position.
c. Passing scores on the content area teacher competency examination accepted by the State of Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.
d. Endorsement in the content area of this position.
e. Waiver request for the basic competency and content area exam requirements submitted to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development for an Emergency Teacher Certificate.
f. World Language competency in Chinese meeting requirements of Alaska Statute 14.20.023 for a limited language immersion teacher certificate.

Native oral and written foreign language speaking ability in the language of this position.

Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally or nationally accredited university or equivalent. If the field of study is not Education, then:

Enrollment in a state‑approved teacher preparation program.
OR the applicant must meet the requirements of Alaska Statute 14.20.023 for a limited language immersion teacher certificate.
