Oversight of Department of Defense project safety program to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
Typical Duties- Participate in the development, planning, and implementation of project-specific safety programs.
- Serve as the onsite safety subject matter expert throughout all construction activities.
- Conduct daily safety briefings and lead morning stretch-and-flex routines.
- Plan, prepare, and facilitate weekly safety meetings on relevant and timely topics.
- Develop, review, and update Activity Hazard Analyses (AHA), including daily AHA (RED Book) reviews with crews and subcontractors.
- Assess site‑specific safety training needs and deliver appropriate training.
- Perform regular daily safety inspections of construction areas and operations.
- Identify, document, and recommend corrective actions for hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions; ensure timely resolution.
- Investigate personal injury incidents, near‑misses, and property damage events; prepare incident reports in accordance with the Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and relevant regulations.
- Conduct industrial hygiene sampling, including multi‑gas detection, heat stress monitoring, air quality assessments, and noise monitoring.
- Issue and manage required permits such as burn permits, dig permits, confined space entry, and Lockout/Tagout.
- Assist with walkthroughs for employees, craft personnel, government inspectors, and regulatory authorities.
- Support emergency response activities as needed.
- Maintain safety systems and equipment, including fall protection, fire protection, rigging, shoring, first aid equipment, gas detectors, and Lockout/Tagout devices.
- Administer site safety incentive and recognition programs.
- Attend monthly SSHO committee or team meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- 5–10 years of construction safety experience with formal training.
- Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA and USACE EM 385-1-1.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance requirements, including SWPPP and HAZMAT.
- Ability to identify hazardous situations and recommend corrective measures.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency with computers and standard office software.
