Position: Engineer I/II/III (Alaska Railroad)

Overview

Purpose of Position: Applies advanced engineering knowledge and skills to lead and manage a diverse range of engineering design and project management tasks. Utilizes independent judgment, creativity, and technical expertise to address complex challenges and oversee projects of significant scale and complexity.

Responsibilities
  • Leads as the primary Design Engineer on assigned projects, with an emphasis in civil and structural disciplines.
  • Executes multifaceted engineering functions encompassing design, construction, maintenance, evaluation, inspection, and repair of infrastructure across the rail belt.
  • Strives to optimize safety, durability, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency in all projects and functions.
  • Drafts plan sets in Auto Desk AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Provides seasoned engineering oversight, review, direction, coordination, and approval of work conducted by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensures technical integrity and compliance with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Assists other Design Engineers as needed.
  • Drafts plan sets in Auto Desk AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Develops technical documentation for permits and facilitates approvals from regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates with federal, state, and local authorities, community groups, and the public to address project-related concerns and conflicts.
  • Evaluates dimensional and excessive weight loads for travel along the rail belt, ensuring adherence to safety standards and established corporate procedures.
  • Applies restrictions to loaded rail cars to permit movement throughout the system, as determined through the above mentioned.
  • Available for regularly scheduled periods of being on-call, in which employee must be available by phone and computer to address clearance issues outside of standard business hours.
  • Provides engineering support for incident management, including evaluation of conditions, development of restoration strategies, and documentation.

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of North American engineering principles and practices;
  • Applies advanced analytical skills to inconclusive, partial, or variable data to: identify project needs, scope, and design criteria; develop designs; generate Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimates; and, recognize and manage risks effectively; and,
  • Proficient in project management methodologies throughout the Design Life-Cycle.
  • Thorough understanding of the Auto Desk suite of programs, with an emphasis on AutoCAD, to complete design elements and/or full packages;
  • Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office’s suite of programs, with an emphasis on Word and Excel; and,
  • Application of standard specifications to, and the generation of specifications (special provisions) for, the work being designed.

  • Manage project resources (individually and as part of a cross-functional team) effectively, including workforce requirements, contract services, and materials;
  • Provides oversight, direction, and coordination to consultants, contractors, and internal teams;
  • Drives project development throughout cross-functional teams by influencing without authority;
  • Formulates recommendations and participate in the formation and/or revision of policy standards;
  • Exercises independent judgment while fostering a collaborative team environment;
  • Advises on the procurement of equipment, services, supplies, materials, and/or merchandise;
  • Recommends payment for services provided under your purview from suppliers, consultants, and contractors;
  • Provide consultation or expert advice to senior leadership; and,
  • May be responsible for providing supervision and/or mentorship to junior engineers.
