Position Overview
The Engineering Assistant 2 (Central Region Materials Rover) serves as a Quality Assurance Materials Rover, ensuring construction materials on transportation projects meet required standards through on‑site sampling, testing, and field checks. Responsibilities include creating material summaries, reviewing project records, preparing certifications, identifying issues, supporting project teams, answering materials questions, providing training, coordinating with consultants and the Regional Materials Lab, and working with contractors to maintain consistent statewide materials quality.

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) mission is to “Keep Alaska Moving.” This role directly contributes to that mission by supporting Alaska’s highways and airports and ensuring project quality.

Work EnvironmentThis role is permanently based in Anchorage, with frequent summer travel—including flights to rural villages. Duties include material sampling and testing on site, design plan reviews, materials close‑out reviews, and training engagements. Regular interaction with project staff, managers, and various teams within DOT&PF is expected.

- Frequent travel within the state.
At least one of the following conditions must be met:
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution, plus one year of entry‑level engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent.
- A bachelor’s degree in the same fields from a non‑ABET institution, an Engineer‑In‑Training or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training certificate (or FE/FS exam verification), plus one year of the required experience.
- Five years of progressively responsible sub‑professional engineering experience, including at least two years as a Journey‑level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or equivalent.
- Graduate study in engineering or architecture may substitute for required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
