Position: Engineering Assistant 1/2 Flex (PCN 253408) Anchorage

What You Will Be Doing

As an Engineering Assistant 1/2 in the Hydrology and Hydraulics group, you will be a designer working under a registered professional engineer. Your primary duty is to assist a team of staff in performing hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) engineering tasks to support the design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and airports at the Central Region Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF).

The position will involve analyzing hydrologic data, performing hydraulic design of large‑diameter culverts, fish‑passage culverts, storm drain systems, and erosion protection of transportation infrastructure. This will include field inspections, sometimes to remote locations by small aircraft.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze hydrologic data and model hydraulic flows.
  • Perform design calculations for culverts, fish‑passage structures, storm drains, and erosion protection.
  • Conduct field inspections, including remote site visits by small aircraft.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, and bid‑ready estimates.
  • Author technical documents such as H&H reports, design study reports, and site visit memos.
  • Assist the project manager with coordinating consultant deliverables for highway and aviation projects.
  • Review engineering submittals from consultants and in‑house groups.
  • Assist with public and agency meetings to support capital improvement projects.
Qualifications
  • Civil Engineering – Knowledge of principles and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain transportation facilities.
  • Hydrology – Understanding of watershed management, climatology, geomorphology, groundwater hydrology, and water quality.
  • Hydraulic Engineering – Ability to analyze fluid flow, estimate river stages, and design hydraulic and drainage structures.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Friendliness, courtesy, empathy, and ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Problem Solving – Identify problems, assess information, generate alternatives, and make recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications (Engineering Assistant
1)
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution.
  • Or a non‑ABET degree plus an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate, or FE/FS completion.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with remote site inspections and ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications (Engineering Assistant
2)
  • Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited institution and one year of entry‑level engineering experience.
  • Or a non‑ABET degree plus EIT/LSIT certificate, FE/FS completion, and one year of entry‑level experience.
  • Or five years of progressively responsible engineering experience with two years at the Journey‑level Technician or Drafting Technician 3 level.
  • Graduate study in engineering or architecture can substitute for required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours = one month of experience).
Working Environment

The position is based in Anchorage at the DOT&PF Central Region Headquarters (4111 Aviation Avenue). The office is a typical cubicle space. Field inspections occur by car; occasional travel to remote sites by small aircraft is required. Some inspections may occur outside normal work hours for emergency response.

Engineering Assistant 1: $32.78 per hour (OT eligible)
Engineering Assistant 2: $37.78 per hour (OT eligible)
